What is a VCPR and why does it matter for your pet?
From the Desk of Dr. Jenny, Veterinary Medical Director
Country Brook Animal Hospital
Dear Country Brook Families,
Did you know that by simply bringing your pet in for their annual veterinary checkup, you’re doing more than just keeping them healthy—you’re also renewing something called a VCPR (Veterinary-Client-Patient Relationship)?

A Veterinary-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR) means we’ve seen your pet within the last year and allows us to legally provide care. If we’ve examined your pet within the last 12 months, you have an active VCPR! This special relationship is not only a legal requirement—it’s also the foundation that allows us to provide the very best veterinary care for your furry family members.
Why does a VCPR matter?
- It keeps care continuous. A valid VCPR allows us to provide medical services like routine checkups, diagnostics, treatments, and medication refills.
- It’s required by law. Without an up-to-date VCPR (renewed every 12 months with a physical exam), we cannot legally prescribe or refill medications.
- It helps us know your pet best. Seeing your pet in person every year gives us firsthand knowledge of their health, so we can catch problems early and make personalized recommendations.
Think of the VCPR as your pet’s “all-access pass” to the highest level of veterinary care.
What does this mean for you?
By scheduling your pet’s annual exam, you’re:
✅ Keeping their VCPR current
✅ Protecting their access to medications and treatments
✅ Taking a proactive step in ensuring they live their happiest, healthiest life
At Country Brook, we know your pets aren’t just animals—they’re family. Let’s keep them feeling their best all year long.
